A.T.I.R.A.: Advanced Tools to Increase the Resilience of Agroecosystems

STATUS: concluded

PERIOD: 2020 – 2021

PARTNER: WBA Onlus and WBA Project srl

THE PROJECT

The A.t.i.r.a. project, financed with funds “POR FSE 2014 – 2020 Regione del Veneto”, was born from the aim of studying the application of a series of good practices that could offer a new perspective of sustainability to agricultural processes.

Two technologists (one expert in agri-environment and one in scientific dissemination), in collaboration with leading Venetian companies and with the INIFAT (Instituto de Investigaciones Fundamentales en Agricultura Tropical) of Cuba, have created the basis for a comparison between Veneto agriculture and what has been detected and applied in the Cuban agricultural reality, studying the application in Veneto (and in Europe) of practices that allow a greater enhancement of the role of the vegetal cover of the soil, which is present in tropical areas, but is often lacking in Europe.

More careful and sustainable agricultural practices in support of biodiversity inevitably lead to an increase in the resilience of the land with positive effects on the quality and quantity of the final product.

Environmental sustainability is a cornerstone not only of the strategy for the development of the primary sector and rural areas that the Veneto Region intends to follow in the next decade, but also of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development defined by the United Nations General Assembly. Only thanks to sustainable agriculture can food security, adequate nutrition and quality, fair and effective education be guaranteed for all.

It is precisely for this reason that one of the cornerstones of the project was the use of a correct, modern and inclusive scientific dissemination capable of showing new scenarios and development perspectives, enhancing the ecosystem services provided by agriculture, stimulating young people and managerial political class to evaluate with greater attention the economic, environmental and social sustainability, both in Veneto and, in perspective, in Cuba.

PURPOSE

In response to the guidelines for 2030 agriculture of the Veneto Region, as well as to the sustainable development goals of the United Nations to be achieved by 2030, this project aims to create a positive synergy of sustainable agri-environmental and agricultural development, to give a new perspective of sustainability to agricultural processes.
