About Us

We are a no-profit Association formed by naturalists, botanists, zoologists and simple nature lovers involved in studying and conserving the biodiversity hot-spots all over the world.

DISCOVERING

During the scientific expeditions of the WBA our members contribute to the inventory of the world’s biodiversity collecting and discovering hundreds of species new to science.

CONSERVATION

To preserve the diversity, the right to life for all living beings, the environmental balance and to avoid the extinction of thousands of species every year, direct actions are needed such as the purchase of rainforest land.

EDUCATION

Biodiversity can be conserved only by a widespread educational activity, according the thought of Baba Dioum: “In the end, we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we have been taught”.

THE NUMBERS OF BIODIVERSITY

100.000

square km of tropical forests destroyed each year (about the same as the area of Portugal) with an estimated extinction of 35.000 species

2.000.000

species until now recorded on our planet

10.000.000

estimated species living on Earth, three quarters of which living in tropical rainforest

17.000

new species (most of them insects) described each year by naturalists

Biodiversity can be defined as the variety of species living in an area and represents the most important resource of the ecosystems of our planet.

BEES FOR BIODIVERSITY

We give a contribution to the diffusion of natural beekeeping based on low use of technology and equipment and high efficiency in controlling diseases and parasites by means of organic techniques.
